Robert Wimmer-Schweingruber

ROBERT F. WIMMER-SCHWEINGRUBER is director at the Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics of the University of Kiel, Germany. He obtained his PhD in physics from the University of Bern, Switzerland. He works in the fields of solar, heliospheric, and space plasma physics as well as applications for exploration and planetology using mainly in situ particle measurements in combination with remote-sensing information. His work aims at understanding the large scale structure of the heliosphere, how it is controlled by the Sun and the surrounding very local interstellar medium, and how particles are transported in this turbulent plasma. He applies this understanding to the radiation environment of solar system bodies and investigates its effects on them and on humans. He is PI/Co-PI of four space instruments and Co-I on numerous others. He has served and continues to serve on numerous committees.
