ESSC regrets the loss of Lodewijk Woltjer, founding President of the European Astronomical Society and former ESSC member

The European Space Sciences Committee (ESSC) regrets to relay the news of the passing away of one of his former members, Lodewijk Woltjer (1930-2019).

Lodewijk Woltjer was the founding President of the European Astronomical Society (EAS), as well as former DG of the European Southern Observatory and initiator of the VLT. A prominent figure in the European astronomy lanscape, his achievements and contributions will remain invaluable to the scientific world.

The ESSC was glad to count Lodewijk Woltjer among its members in the 1990s; his contributions and involvement in the committee greatly contributed to its building over the years.
