World on Track for 3.2 Degrees Celsius of Warming, Latest IPCC Report Warns

April 06, 2022

The latest IPCC report from Working Group III came out Monday, April 4th, 2022. It warns that policies in place to reduce emissions as of December 2020 would lead the planet to 3.2 degrees Celsius of warming, more than double the 1.5 degrees limit that is essential for avoiding the worst impacts of the climate crisis, and offers a variety of measures that could, if implemented strongly and quickly, could hold warming to 1.5°C. The role of power politics, finance and vested interests in hampering progress are described. The good news is that technologies and policies exist to move forward, not least as a result of the massive (80%) reductions in the cost of renewables in the recent decade.

The report is clear that humanity must immediately change course if it wants to seriously mitigate climate change.
